Latest Whatcom County Strandings:

On July 15th, the Whatcom Marine Mammal Stranding Network received a call about a seal pup at Birch Bay.  The pup was located on a populated portion of beach below the Blue Fish Restaurant.  An adult female Harbor Seal who appeared to have been the pup's mother was found dead near by.  The cause of death appeared to be complications with the birth.  The pup was very healthy and active but without a mother to nurse him and was in need of help as beach goers, kids and dogs were harassing the pup.

Volunteers arrived to crate the pup for a quick transfer to the Wolf Hollow Rehab Center in Friday Harbor and put him on the next flight.  The pup is now doing well at the rehab facility and is a boy.  His name is Dogwood and we hope he can be released into the wild again soon, probably in late September or early October.

Thanks to the volunteers who participated in this days event including: Marcia Steadman, Katharine Sell, Shirley Sell, Stasi Edgar & Lynn & Michael Bowland.

We have had 2 separate pups up at Point Roberts that were called in (7-17 and 7-25).  Unfortunately we don't have any qualified stranding responders from that area and it is too far to go for one of us.  One pup eventually swam off while the other one wound up dying.

If you are in the Point Roberts area and are interested in volunteering please contact Bob Ryerson, Director of Volunteers at 360-306-1568 or email volunteers@wmmsn.org

On July 20 we had a pup from Lummi Island eventually make her way to Wolf Hollow via plane thanks to Claudia, Cindy and Victoria.  Her name is Honeysuckle if you want to check on her condition there.

We had a harbor seal pup show up at Sandy Point beach on July 22 that luckily found his way back to his mom. We had a harbor seal up show up dead at the Sandy Point marina on July 25. Thanks to Marcia for taking care of both of these.  The 25th was a busy day!  We also had another harbor seal up die on Lummi Island that was taken care of by Claudia and Victoria. And on the 24th we had another harbor seal pup show up at the Semiahmoo marina dead.  Thanks to Katharine and Starra for taking care of that one.

On July 28, we had a harbor seal pup wash up on Neptune Beach. Marcia took care of that one.  And on July 29, we had a harbor seal pup found dead at Birch Bay Village that was decapitated and skinned.  Starra moved this pup to Mike's freezer for later necropsy as this looked to caused by human interference, but we will confirm that later after Mike gets back in September.  On July 30, Katharine and Starra responded to a dead harbor seal yearling found at Blaine Harbor

And not to let anyone think they missed opportunities to respond, August is also starting off with a bang.  We had a harbor seal pup reported at Chuckanut Drive  (Aug. 2) in front of a home owner's beach.  The pup had been there since Saturday (Jul 31) but was not reported until Monday as she didn't know who to call (hence the importance of our educational booths!).  Lynn and her daughter DeAnna responded and reported that he was weak and near death.  We decided to give our new seal pup triage protocol a shot so they collected him and brought him to NW Wildlife Rehab Center for overnight fluids and stabilization prior to flying out today (no flights were available that afternoon) to see if they could revive him but, alas he didn't even last an hour.  Thanks to Lynn, DeAnna, Stacy, and Julie for all your hard work.

Updates 2010

July:   A dead harbor seal at Sandy Point (7-3), a dead harbor seal pup at Semiahmoo Marina (7-2) and a live harbor seal pup (7-5) that went to Wolf Hollow for rehab. We have had a seal pup watch on Cypress Island (7-9). That pup eventually swam away. A dead seal pup (7-14) at Semiahmoo marina that appears to have strayed too close to a river otter territory and was killed by the family of river otters (or the mom).  (7-15) we had a live harbor seal pup at Birch Bay that was sent to Wolf Hollow for rehab as the dead mother was found not too far away and the pup was continually harassed by kids and dogs on the Birch bay beach. An onsite necropsy of the mother seal took place on (7-16) to determine cause of death.

June:  On (6-1) a deceased juvenile Steller's sea lion on Lummi Island.  The sea lion was a young male and was found to be very emaciated.  It was collected by members of the WMMSN and was used for our recent necropsy training.

April: (4-12) The WMMSN responded to an adult male  gray whale that stranded on Samish Island.  It was towed to a location on Lummi Island and a necropsy was performed on April 14, 2010.  For photos and more information on this stranding response, click here

March: A juvenile harbor seal that had been decapitated stranded on (3-27) on Squalicum Beach.  It did appear to have collided with a boat.
